Paul Mullin’s Wrexham exit ‘won’t be easy’ but there is one path that ‘makes a lot of sense’

The future of Paul Mullin is a massive talking point for Wrexham fans, and we can now exclusively reveal that a new method of getting him out of the club may be an option.

Despite being the star man for the first few years of the Ryan and Rob era at Wrexham, there’s no denying that Paul Mullin became a peripheral figure last season.

The striker struggled with injury and form and ended up slipping so far down the pecking order that he was not even in Phil Parkinson’s matchday squad for the final 18 games (aside from one outing on the bench).

Now, while Mullin is eager to play in the Championship with Wrexham, it seems inevitable that he will move on this summer, but we’re told that exit will not be easy to facilitate.

Wrexham could send Paul Mullin on loan

The Wrexham Insider can exclusively reveal, via information from our Chief Football Correspondent Graeme Bailey, that the Red Dragons will struggle to move Mullin on permanently due to the nature of his contract at the club. But, this will open the door for a potential loan move.

Bailey said: “I think he will go, but it’s whether that’s a permanent or it might be a loan move. It will not be the easiest permanent deal to do. For him to go permanently, it’s a big outlay for Wrexham.

“People don’t realise but when players go, they do need these contracts paid up as well and it’s not that easy, especially when buying clubs can’t include that in a fee they pay to the selling club. It’s easier for Championship and Premier League clubs to do it, but at this level, because he’s not going to stay in the Championship, he’s going to be dropping down, it won’t be easy for someone to do it.

“Depending on which club go for him, I certainly wouldn’t rule a loan move out at this point. Obviously we know Wrexham have that good relationship with him, so maybe they would let him go and make it easier, to help him out. But a loan move makes a lot of sense at this stage.”

Mullin has been linked with Wigan again this week. A drop down to League One is obvious for the 30-year-old, but whether Wigan, or any other club, would be able to afford to pay out that Wrexham contract is another matter.

Loan move could be perfect for Paul Mullin and Wrexham fans

In many ways, sending Mullin out on loan could be ideal for pretty much everyone. The big winners, though, would be the Wrexham fans.

Wrexham fans are resigned to losing Mullin, but they really don’t want him to go. If he were merely borrowed by another club, that relationship with Mullin as a Wrexham player would still technically exist, even if it was unlikely he would ever play for the club again.

The same goes for Mullin, too. He would get to go out and play first-team football and get his career back on track, while still knowing at heart that he is a Wrexham player.

It’s all merely emotional and arbitrary, really, but we know how much these connections mean to everyone involved. Plus, if it works from a financial perspective for Wrexham to get at least some of his wages paid, then it’s a win-win for everyone.
